Y is for York County...and You!
Look in the mirror. YOU are part of history in the making. Whether you are one of Kennebunk’s 10,500 residents, one of 1.3 million Mainers, or one of the 35 million tourists to visit the Pine Tree State each year, you play as important a role in shaping the heritage of the Kennebunks as any of the things you’ve learned about in this exhibition.
York Village – Location of “the true” Jefferds Tavern
Originally located on Harriseeket Road in Wells, this is considered to be “the true” Jefferds Tavern because it was built earlier then the other one (1754) and it has had this name since it was built. In the 1930s, it was taken down piece by piece and moved to York Village. It is now on the campus of the York Historical Society. This cardboard exhibition model was made in the late 19th century.
