USB CABLE MODEM
If you don't have an Ethernet hub or router, then you may consider using a USB cable modem. A cable modem converts the broadband signal into data understandable to your wired device and vice-versa. With the Toshiba Modem typically used here in Maine, you can operate both the USB and the Ethernet port on the modem simultaneously. Just plug your gaming console into the network port, while keeping your computer on the USB port.

If you have a different cable modem that connects directly to your machine via USB, then you may need a second network card to connect from your computer to the game console. Note that if you have a USB Ethernet adapter for use with your Cable Uplink you can use any of the other configurations since a USB Ethernet adapter is basically just a type of network card. An additional card is ONLY needed if your Cable Modem connects directly to your machine via USB (no network cable), and will not support simultaneous connections on the modem.

ETHERNET CABLE
An Ethernet cable, usually category 5 cable, carries the broadband signal.

HUB/ROUTER
A hub/router splits the broadband data signal between Internet devices. At this time, Road Runner provides up to five(5) IP addresses per residential account. Each connected device requires its own IP address.

SONY PLAYSTATION 2/3 - Basic Setup
You will need to run a setup software when installing your router software specific to your cable service and your PS2 with optional network adapter disc does the setup automatically. Your best bet is to purchase an all-in-one router with 4-port switch included, such as brands like Linksys, D-Link, 3COM, Netgear, Cisco, Orinoco, Asante, Proxim, SMC, or Siemens. These usually run between $75 to $125. If you have a Playstation 3 with the 20 GB hard drive, you only have an Ethernet connection. If you have a Playstation 3 with the 60GB hard drive, you have your choice of Ethernet or wireless.

The XBox 360 comes installed with an ethernet connection, or a wireless adapter at additional cost.
